Report: Chelsea moving in 'positive' direction to sign 21-year-old thanks to 'good relationship' with his agent

Chelsea are in a good relationship with the representatives of AS Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni after last summer’s negotiations for Jules Kounde’s failed move to Stamford Bridge, according to The Telegraph’s Matt Law.

At least for now, the wing-backs situation should be a priority in Chelsea’s January agenda, considering Ben Chilwell’s long-term injury and Reece James’ recent hamstring problem.

However, the lack of wing-back options is not the only problem Thomas Tuchel has had to deal with.

N’Golo Kante’s injury record in the last few years suggests Chelsea cannot rely on him to play as often as they would have liked.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Saul Niguez are in the squad to provide cover for now but neither has really been convincing.

It is hardly a surprise that the Blues have reportedly been looking for potential midfield targets in the transfer market.

According to The Telegraph football correspondent Law, two names are currently under Chelsea’s radar: Monaco’s rising star, Tchouameni, and West Ham young leader Declan Rice.

Chelsea, Law claims, are inching closer to signing the former, thanks to their relationship with his agent.

Chelsea in ‘positive’ direction in pursuit of Tchouameni, says Law

“It feels like it’s heading in that direction,” Law told the London is Blue Podcast when asked whether Tchouameni is the first midfielder on Chelsea’s shortlist.

“I think he shares an agent with [Sevilla’s Jules] Kounde whom [Chelsea] are very much in touch with, and I think there’s a good relationship between Chelsea and Kounde’s agent from everything that went on in the summer.

“There was certainly no blame attached to Kounde’s agent that the deal ended up heading south, it was all put on Sevilla’s changing the goalposts.

“I know Kounde’s agent was annoyed with Sevilla.

“It feels like he [Tchouameni] would be the sort of cheaper option than Declan Rice. Whether that makes him option A, let’s see.

“But I certainly think, at the moment, there’s a direction of travel that is quite positive in terms of Chelsea and Tchouameni.”

Tchouameni and Kounde are both represented by French sports agency Excellence Sport Nation, so Law might have had a good point.

The journalist, however, also argued that it is very unlikely that Chelsea will be alone in the race to sign the France international.

The 21-year-old is under contract until summer 2024, so Monaco could be under pressure to cash in on the midfielder soon
