Barcelona lead the race to sign Chelsea defender

Centre-backs have been the talk of the town after Barcelona’s dismal defensive track record this season. Though there are several big names on the market, the priority is to secure a transfer with a minimal fee.
In that regard, Andreas Christensen emerged as an ideal candidate for the Spanish club. The defender not only brings experience under his belt but also happens to be in the final year of his contract with Chelsea. Since his current deal expires in June, Christensen can now sign a pre-contract agreement with another club.
According to the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich lead the race to sign the centre-back. Several Premier League clubs were also interested in the opportunity to win his services, yet the defender has chosen to reject them out of respect for his current club
Christensen was part of the UEFA Champions League winning Chelsea team that trumped Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the 2020 final. Last season, the tall defender was involved in 15 league starts of which he ensured a clean sheet on eight occasions.
His impressive form carried into the 2020 European Championship as well current, and then into the current season. Christensen averages two interceptions and three clearances per game in the Premier League. Alongside Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger, the youngster is part of one of the league’s best defences.
Ronald Araujo is the only guaranteed starter in defence under Xavi Hernandez. With Gerard Pique’s future unclear, the Dane could easily walk into the Barcelona lineup next season. The only conflict could seemingly arise because of his preferred position overlapping with Araujo’s.
He does, however, boast of a skill-set that fits the bill perfectly for Barcelona Secure with the ball at his feet, Christensen is a skilled passer, reader of the game. It’s a match made in heaven.
At just 25 years of age, Andreas Christensen has the best years of his career ahead of him. A free transfer would be the ideal icing on the cake.
