Ralf Rangnick makes Fred & Elanga admission, explains why he subbed Paul Pogba off

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick explains Paul Pogba’s substitution and confessed that he solely brought in Anthony Elanga and Fred to add energy into the team and not to get on the scoresheet

Shortly after the interval, the home side responded with two quick goals from Rodrigo and Raphinha, with Fernandes slammed for playing a role in the Leeds United equaliser.

Rangnick replaced Pogba, who was brilliant in the first half, midway through the second half with Fred. Jesse Lingard also joined the Frenchman while Anthony Elanga came on.

Three minutes later, Fred restored Manchester United’s lead with a beautiful strike and Rangnick didn’t need enough time to explain the reason behind what many described as a shocking decision to haul off Pogba.

After the game, the German boss explained he had to take off Paul Pogba because he appeared a ‘little bit’ tired, though he confirmed the World Cup winner was brilliant in the first half.

“He [Paul Pogba] did well in the first half but he didn’t play from the wing, he played as one of the two eights together with Bruno [Fernandes] – on the wing we played with Jesse Lingard and Jadon Sancho,” said Rangnick.

“He did great but after 60-minutes I think he was a little bit tired, which is normal after such a long injury break and it was great to bring on two energetic players like Fred and Anthony Elanga.”

The German boss replaced Cristiano Ronaldo with Raphael Varane in the 85th minute. This sub enabled Rangnick to play Elanga as his centre-forward. Three minutes later, the Man United academy graduate gave the answers.

But the former RB-Leipzig manager claim he didn’t bring both Fred and Anthony Elanga to give Manchester United their much-needed goals late in the game.

Rangnick added: “They [Fred & Elanga] both scored in the end and this is the best part of it but I didn’t bring them on actually to score goals.

“It was more about getting more energy into the team again and playing in a similar style to as we did in the first half
